Manifesto

Bernhard Karlowitz studied Fine Arts at the Kassel State Academy of Art. As a student, he was an integral part of the academic vision of a »New Painting« within the class of Professor Rolf Lobeck. During the late 20th century, the Lobeck concept of painting—navigating the space between Informel and Figuration within the »New Painting (+ Media)« class—stood as a niche-academic counter-position to the dominant conceptualism of the era. Bernhard Karlowitz is one of the very few painters who has consistently advanced the proccesual nature of the Informel into the classical sujets of fine art.
The painterly consistency documented throughout his œuvre over the past 30 years provides material falsification to the contemporary thesis that painting can no longer offer valid, autonomous answers after the rise of conceptualism.
To adopt an artistic position is merely a theoretical decision—yet to champion and defend it in its absolute consequence against the current for decades leads to that profound artistic maturity which ultimately resulted in the founding of KAKUAKMO as the Academy of the New Modern in 2021.
The painter Bernhard Karlowitz elucidates the pedagogical approach of his Academy of the New Modern.
The four Pillars of KAKUAKMO
The rediscovery of the workshop tradition. It is rooted in the specialized art practice of the working artist, who teaches an individual, distinct form of art as both a position and a technique. This academic instruction is unique, specific, and institutionally independent.
Learning art means understanding the school of perception as a whole and perfecting the techniques of art as a means of expression. Art does not mean developing a pleasing idea and exploiting technique to serve it.
Academic learning incorporates ancient philosophy, according to which the goal of education is the perception of the self, the world, and society. The classical discourse on the doctrine of beauty and the visualization of poetry prerequisites individual character building. Art originates from the artist's position .
The Modern breaks art away from pure service and demands that the artist discover and express a distinct, authentic position. Copyism, serial aestheticism, and the visualization of slogans are, therefore, not art.
How does the conceptual vision of the "Academic" become the foundational cornerstone of the Academy of the New Modern? Bernhard Karlowitz elucidates this in a few precise words in the video below.
The School of Personality and Perception — Platonic educational philosophy as the foundation of artistry
Within his specialization, Bernhard Karlowitz defines a distinct individual position:
who, in the lineage of Hans Platschek, conceives figuration as an autonomous object emerging directly from the painterly act within the context of the pictorial space.
within Prof. Rolf Lobeck's class for »New Painting (+ Media)«.
who masterfully reconstructed the ancient earth-color register, displaying it in large-scale portraits and figurations.
who advances the classical portrait in real-time sittings as a symbol of a New Modern.
The ancient, proto-scientific practice of
the capturing, understanding, and characterization of an inner essence purely through visual observation—has been abandoned by modern sciences; for the real-time painter, it remains the fundamental, core investigation of the subject.
As a
who places drawing, in the tradition of Cézanne, into the binding service of painting.
While the drawing remains »classically anchored« in the grand narrative tradition of fine art, it becomes the seismographic medium of the artist's observatoric perception during the act of creation.
As a
who corrects the school of seeing, proportion, and the measurement of figure and space with academic, pinpoint accuracy for his students.
The monolinear drawing, wherein measurements are precisely established, serves as the point of origin for training the artist's deep sensitization.
As a
who, through a phenomenological approach to art, discursively counters the rigid mathematical systems of graphic perspective with the lived perspective of the working artist.
In this school, perspective is never engineered on a drawing board; it is measured purely by the trained eye within the direct act of real-time observation of space and light.

Bernhard Karlowitz is one of the very few fine artists capable of discursively theorizing, communicating, and physically demonstrating art in equal measure.
In contrast to the purely didactic and theoretical instruction found within the institutional educational machine, the theory of the working artist emerges directly from the practical application of material and the creating hands. This theory is never bound to an abstract textbook; it is deeply indebted to the concrete, physical problem arising from the painterly act upon the canvas. It stands as the demystification of theory: it culminates directly in the physical instruction of how the hand must guide the material—forcing authenticity to be materially earned, rather than merely conceptually claimed.
Following ten years of independent professional practice as an artist, Karlowitz immersed himself in the study of ancient philosophy. He proceeded to reflect upon the thematic worlds of his art, alongside the technical dimensions of painting and drawing, distilling his insights into demanding university-level lecture texts, working protocols, and essays. A selection of these essays is published directly on this website and within the bernh-art Blog.
Students at the Academy of the New Modern enroll in either the »Drawing Masterclass« or the »Painting Masterclass«. All subject-specific specializations—such as »Landscape«, »Portrait«, »Free Drawing«, or »Figuration«—inevitably result from these two foundational paths of study. They form the bedrock of that ultimate unity which the school's opening maxim proclaims:
